La Grave Snow Board Safari: Wednesday 27th   La Grave Village.....!

As we hit the sack last night the wind had really picked up, but it was still snowing hard. Throughout the night gusts came and made the shutters of  the lodge clatter. It was obvious that we were in the midst of a big storm, so by the time we went down for breakfast we knew we could well be snowed in, as there was no way any lift would be working in any station in the immediate vicinity. I must say things looked bleak.

At 10:00 the guides announced to everyone to get their gear together, we were going to hit the snow, how was not a question! It transpired that even with the wind, we would be able to board down from near the lodge (1800mtrs) over terraces and meadows   to La Grave village (1,300 mts). First we had to go down to pick our boards up which had been serviced over night (60ff). We were then taken back up in the minibus, where we started the first of our descents.

Walking down from the Lodge!!

Start of the descent down to the village

The descent was another amazing experience, with a good metre of fresh snow, on no base. You had to get real speed up to get through it, straight line with a minimum of turns, then as you hit the terraces things became all the more bizarre, with head plants being the order of the day. At times the front of the board was carrying 20 cubic litres of snow!

Then once past the terraces and meadows we proceeded to drop in on a track which led in to the top of the village, now the real fun started.......I've been chased by dogs whilst out running, and even when cycling, but snow boarding???

Boarding down the chutes of La Grave!!

I had actually had no idea there was a dog behind me!

We did two runs before lunch, with the mini buses taking us back up, the runs down became slightly easier as we knew what to expect, and what line to take.

Then after a superb lunch we put another couple of runs in, by then we were really letting the boards run, and the terraces became an opportunity to attempt some air, but invariably ended up with me face planting in a snow hole,,,,,,

What a day, and it's still snowing!!
