La Grave Snow Board Safari: Monday 25th Jan Alpe D'Huez: Pyramide  & Perrins Routes

What a day, as I write this we can look back and revel in today's runs. Our guide again was Per who insisted on an early start, we arrived at Alpe D'Huez around 09:30, it's about an hour from the lodge. Weather again was more of the same, as the high pressure still holds, glorious blue sky.

First run of the day was up to Clocher, and down the Balcons off piste bowls down to the lake, though it was reasonably skied out  it was enough for yours truly to do my first head plant of the day with disastrous results as I later found out!!

So we arrived at the lake to see the chair out wasn't working, as I bent over to undo my bindings a whole load of liquid poured down my neck, in my wipe out I had burst my camel-bak in my ruck sack, with net result 1.5 litres of sticky High 5 energy drink, swimming around in my pack, thank God the video camera was still dry! The chair cranked up and we got to the top.

We then travelled over to the L'Alpette cable car, where we then did the first of the off piste routes, Perrin, again as we ducked under the ropes with all the usual danger signs the usual feeling of trepidation came over......the snow was superb, with only rocks down to the bottom. We lunched at the bottom of L'Alpette, then took the car back up, and crossed over to Pic Blanc.

Perrin Route, note the untracked

At the top of Pic Blanc we then went under the ropes and traversed across, had to use the poles, and Jes took out his snow shoes as we commenced the hike up to Pic De La Pyramide, it was about 20 mins hike, the poles were really a help on the climb, and Jes certainly found the snow shoes excellent. The route down started off with some steep chutes that were not too  bad, from there they opened out into a number of superb untracked bowls, where we gave Per the video, and ended up with some good film, yours truly put his second somersault of the day in!!

What a day, it just goes to demonstrate the advantages of touring with a Guide, there's no way we could have experienced the snow we found without Per!
